Saint Laurent: Rock Spring – If last season was Hedi Slimane’s grunge collection, the spring 2014 season for Saint Laurent can be dubbed the French fashion house’s eighties moment. The designer referenced power dressing style with boxy cut jackets, menswear inspired suits paired with skinny ties and form-fitting leather skirts. The Le Smoking Jacket which the Saint Laurent name is famous for was incorporated in a rock and roll style, worn with skinny pants and sheer shirts. Dresses featured Paris Fashion Week’s metallic trend; finished with one shoulder in a dramatic and voluminous fashion. With his third runway show, Slimane’s vision for Saint Laurent is proving to be all about the cool factor and youthful style.

Fall/Winter 2014-15 Ready-To-Wear
OH yes, you can spot a Saint Laurent girl a mile off. She’s the spiky one with a bored expression, kohl-rimmed eyes, wearing a short dress with a bit of a boot. Hedi Slimane has wasted no time in communicating the sort of woman he is interested in and there were lots of those groupies here tonight, hoards of ambi-sexual boys and girls dressed in skinny jeans with quiffs who stood at the back behind seated guests.
The booklet that is the show invitation was a mini catalogue of American conceptualists artist, John Baldessari, known for his appropriation work featuring found photographs. One couldn't help but begin to make parallels between the artist and this designer who re-mixes Sixties youth culture for now.
His catwalk was laden in gold steel bars, as the lights came on each one lifted up on hydraulics to form an inverted V cage which models walked through. Out they came in sequinned tweedy coats, skinny lapel blazers, tartan skirts and grey school girl pleated minis partnered up with patent knee high boots or glittery Mary Janes.
There was nothing here that particularly surprised, nothing so extraordinary in fact - and that isn’t a bad thing. It all looked like pieces you might find in any vintage store. Just on a very good day. Girls the world over dream of stumbling across that perfect fuzzy leopard print coat, that just-right leather biker jacket shrunken and studded, velvety Wednesday Adams little black dresses, and here is where they will find it – albeit at a price, but what price can you put on those items that will endure for years to come; his designs are timeless. That leather jacket will still look good in a decade, so too the khaki army parka with fur trimmed hood. another note: there were a ton of pieces here, and it will be exciting to see it unravelled on the racks in stores come autumn.
A group finale comprised a storm of jewel sequined and otherwise embellished mini dresses each cloaked in a black cape every which way, from velvet to lambs leather. Slimane's groupies watched with jaws dropped, longing for everything.
